A Story Where Trauma Meets Compassion
Once upon a time, in a land far, far away, lived a person who experienced so much pain and suffering over the course of their life that they questioned their existence.
They had medical issues while surrounded by able-bodied people pushing them past their physical limit; Leading to alienation, additional physical problems, and aversion to their own body and movement.
They experienced childhood neglect, abuse, loss, death of loved ones, constant moving, financial instability, and a sense of abandonment.
They suffered loneliness, distrust of others, and self-loathing in every aspect. Consistent nightmares and intrusive thoughts were just a small portion of the suffering faced daily.
They were silenced, criticized, and often felt manipulated. In the ideals of their religion, they fell short and felt ashamed.
They contemplated ending it all. Often.
But there was compassion.
A compassion they felt from their renewed spiritual connection to their God.
A compassion they felt from their friends and family - and even strangers.
And incredibly enough, a compassion they grew to feel for themselves - and for the little child they used to be.
Can you guess who this story is about?
A compassion they felt for those suffering around them.
My name is Nicky McDowell-Horn. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor-Associate supervised by Mark Cagle, LPC-S. I created Compassionist Counseling Services LLC with the goal of spreading compassion in an effort to help our society win the war for mental health wellness.
The difference compassionate therapy makes:
Looking at traumatic experiences feels safer and more productive to explore, because the journey is navigated by someone who genuinely cares about you and your situation.
Emotions are welcomed rather than shamed, and you learn how to manage and direct your emotions for your benefit.
Every self-doubting and self-shaming notion is countered with rational and realistic replacement thoughts, followed up with hope and observation of your strengths.
No more meaningless suffering; You will discover your core beliefs and goals, and from there derive concrete plans that move at your own pace.
It is my life’s purpose to help using my experiences. And I am living proof that leaning into compassion can help get someone through the darkest times.
Let me share my compassion for you and your story. Reach out today.

Testimonial of Services Received
“Throughout my life, I have experienced significant trauma that deeply impacted my mental health, leading to anxiety, and depression.
Over the past year, I have had the privilege of working with Nicole, and the progress I’ve made during this time has been truly transformative. For years, I struggled despite working with multiple therapists who were unable to help me make meaningful progress. However, Nicole’s approach has made a profound difference. Through her guidance, I’ve learned effective strategies to manage my emotions and overcome some of my greatest challenges, particularly with anxiety and depression.
Thanks to her support, I now live a much more balanced and productive life. While I understand that mental health conditions such as anxiety and depression don’t simply disappear, I’ve been given the tools to manage and navigate them in healthy, empowering ways. I am deeply grateful for Nicole’s dedication and the life-changing impact she has had on my journey.”
